TRENITALIA FROM ROME TO POMPEI:

Today Trenitalia released its Winter 2023/2024 schedules. Among other developments, it has reconfirmed the weekly SUNDAY direct Frecciarossa train from Roma Termini at 8:53, arriving Pompei F.S. Station (NOT the Circumvesuviana Villa dei Misteri Station) at 10:40. (On the Trenitalia website this station is called simply "Pompei"). The return direct train departs Pompei at 18:40 and arrives in Rome at 20:55. This service avoids the usual connection at Napoli Centrale to the half-hourly Circumvesuviana commuter train, which is often very crowded, especially during commute hours. At the Pompei F.S. Station there is a special bus which takes you to the Pompei Anfiteatro entrance. Be sure to purchase your ticket from Roma Termini to "Pompei Scavi" to include this bus. Otherwise, you will need to walk around 800 meters to the park entrance. The one-way "Base" fare for this service (full fare) is 51 Euros for adults. However, by purchasing the ticket in advance, you can find discounted fares which yield savings of up to 75% (refunds and changes are not allowed on most of the discounted fares, and even the "Ti Rimborso" refund option is available only on certain discounted fares)

This direct service is highlighted here:

Bear in mind that you can always reach the Pompei archeological park by changing trains at Napoli Centrale, then taking the escalator down one flight to the lower level and proceeding to the Circumvesuviana station (called Napoli Garibaldi). Here is the current Circumvesuviana schedules for Pompei Villa dei Misteri:

A ticket for the regular Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompei Villa dei Misteri costs 3.30 Euros each way (called "Corsa semplice aziendale"). With the direct trains, you'll avoid potentially missing your connection at Napoli Centrale going to or coming from Pompei.

NOTE THAT THE RETURN BUS FROM THE POMPEI ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK TO POMPEI F.S. STATION DEPARTS AT 18:15. The Frecciarossa train for Rome departs at 18:40/

NOTE: If you cannot find a deeply discounted advance purchase fare, you can always take a Trenitalia INTERCITY train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then transfer to the Circumvesuviana. The Intercity train has a much lower "Base" fare (as well as lower discounted fares), but takes nearly twice as long compared to the Frecciarossa.

ITALO TRENO FROM ROME TO POMPEI:

You can also check schedules and fares between Roma Termini and Pompei on rival Italo Treno (which has its own connecting bus ("Itabus") to the Pompei Archeological Park from Napoli Afragola Station). You can buy a ticket from "Roma Termini" to "Pompei".

IMPORTANT NOTE: Italo's connecting Itabus to Pompei operates DAILY to and from the Napoli Afragola Station, not just on Sundays.

From the Italo Treno website:

"Reach new destinations in Campania thanks to Italo's connections with Itabus
Discover the enchanting excavations of Pompeii.
Thanks to Italo and Itabus you can reach Pompeii, Ercolano and Sorrento
Departures from Turin, Milan, Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples"

SUMMARY:

You don't need to connect to the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei in order to visit the archeological park if that is your preference. Both Trenitalia and Italo Treno have a more direct service, involving a combination of train and bus.
