I'm not a fan of big cruise liners, but....

Great to see this happen, a cruise ship donating food to local residents, because the ship had to change plans, passengers ate the previous night on the island rather than the boat, and the cruise length had been cut short.

What would have been food waste, gets eaten

Indeed very commendable.
But I still don't understand - if all the food was frozen/canned/etc., and the delay was just a few days at most (if I understood correctly) - why did all this food have to be disposed of, one way or other? Is the industry over-doing expiration date rules? All of us keep frozen and canned food at home for much longer.

A good question. Perhaps they wanted to save on running the freezers / plan to turn them off to clean / defrost at the end of a trip, or it's costly to unload & stocktake?

Yes, that might be it actually. Still, seems like a costly/wasteful procedure (when the food is not donated) for a ship that is supposed to be in use all the time, or at least with short breaks at the most.
