The Guardian - Lonely Planet selects Salisbury among top 10 cities to visit
Wiltshire city listed along with Washington, El Chaltén, Milan and Zermatt in travel guide’s selection of places to visit in 2015, by Will Coldwell, 21 October 2014

We spent a week in Salisbury on our 2005 UK trip. It is a lovely town (population 40,000) with a lively center. The 13th century cathedral is impressive, as are the grounds and houses in the cathedral close. There are good walking trails from the town center. There is a Waitrose supermarket near the center. Old Sarum, an Iron Age hill fort that was the original site of the town and cathedral is 2 miles away.

Nearby are Stonehenge (prehistoric stone circle) and Shaftesbury (delightful medieval town).

In retirement I've found time to revisit Victorian novels, particularly those of Anthony Trollope. A visit to the cathedral close in Salisbury in 1852 inspired Trollope's "The Warden", about politics within and outside the hierarchy of the clerical world of the close, and the subsequent novels in his Barsetshire Chronicles series.

To walk within the close and enjoy the magnificence of the cathedral made the novels come to life in my mind. One can visit Mompesson House within the close, owned by the National Trust (its garden is a lovely setting for afternoon tea). A must for those who enjoy Trollope!

I have read a few novels by Trollope and would like to read all of his Barsetshire Chronicles. I did not realize it was set in Salisbury.
