MXP to Maggiore logistics

I fly into Malpensa and go directly to Lago Maggiore. I am trying to figure out the best way to get there.

  • Pick up car at MXP and drop-off at Centrale (for train rest of trip)?
  • Minimize cost and pick up and drop off at MXP and then train to Centrale?
  • Train to Como, pick up and drop off car there?
I also haven't rented a car in ages; and recs for agencies to focus on or more importantly, avoid?

Grazie!

Will let others talk about the logistics, but will insert reminder that Italy now requires International Drivers Permit for car rental.

We've always had a good experience with AutoEurope for car rentals - a U.S. based consolidator. We really like their no deductible option. I'm not sure if they still use Sicily By Car but avoid them if they do. We typically choose a rental from Avis/Hertz/Europecar through them.

I dont know how this meshes with the rest of your trip but its super easy to pick up a car at mxp and drive to maggiore in less than an hour. No autostrada to deal with, easy peasy.

Thanks - that part I know, I'm just if that's based based on the fact that I'm not going back tot he airport, but rather to the trains station.
