New Apple SIM card for iPad - any experience?

My husband just bought a new iPad planning on taking it to Europe later this summer. It came with an apple sim which is supposed to be able to connect with local carriers once we're abroad to sign up for the pay-as-you-go plan of your choice. Has anyone used these yet? Do you end up paying more than if you'd purchased the SIM card directly from the carrier? We'd not heard of these, maybe just out of the loop. Thanks.
