Dates and makroud...

Dates are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and date trees are found all over Tunisia. There are different varieties of dates and these yellow dates are not edible, but used to make palm oil.

The brown varieties are the ones we are more familiar with (usually boxed for Christmas). They are eaten a bit like sweets in Tunisia and most hotels had a plate of dates in the bedroom for guests to nibble. These were on sale in the souk in Tunis.

Dates are also used to make makroud which is a deep fried dough stuffed with dates. It is very good, very more-ish and packed full of calorioes...

Hi @Eleanor!
Very happy to see dates posted here, but I think the above photo is a date palm, and not an oil palm. The yellow fruits are either : 1) on their way to changing color to orange/red and then to brown, or 2) most likely were not pollinated well, did not "set" well, and therefore will not develop into proper fruits. They might even be of the same type that you have shown as the ripened dates on bunches in the souk, a variety called "Deglet Noor". Also, Tunisia is not a grower of oil palms afaik, as these are grown in more equatorial countries.

While I'm here, I'll add one from Genoa and one from Bologna :

Some may call it nectar of the gods…

Sciacchetrà is a dessert wine from Liguria (the Cinque to be exact) and is the essence of sweet.

Although it can be found at the 20 euro level for a .375 cl bottle, the real deal exceeds 100 euro for this small vessel of liquid gold.

Much like the famed Chateau d'Yquem it something to behold. Maybe not for everybody, but
always memorable.

During these past Christmas holidays I was in South Tyrol and I took a photo of their Christmas desserts!

The local cuisine is something in between the Venetian and the Austrian cuisine, so you find quite peculiar dishes. In this pic, on the right, you can see zelten, which is a very caloric cake made of dried fruits. The others are Christmas biscuits: locals usually make them at home and gift them to their friends and family. Many people do not spend money to buy useless gifts and prefer to just exchange these biscuits/cookies. I love this idea!
