Place next to Fiumicino

I have a flight leaving Fiumicino airport for Australia at 11am on 26 September having arrived the day before. I wouldn't mind visiting the centre of Rome on 25 for a bit but I was thinking of staying close to the airport so arriving at around 8.30 for the departure wasn't too hard. Any suggestions?

There are several hotels right at the airport- you can walk to your gate. You can take the metro from the terminal into Rome too. One is the Hilton but i think there are others too.

I think most people here would advise staying in Rome if your flight isn't super-early and you want to have time in Rome. In our trips the last two years, when we or people with us had very early flights, we've stayed at the airport Hilton, which has a walkway to the terminal. Both years, it had plumbing problems but they fixed them; it's showing some age but being renovated, as I understand. The Hilton Garden Inn is on the airport grounds but needs to be accessed by shuttle. In the town of Fiumicino, some Slow people have recommended this place with a shuttle:

In similar circumstances, we usually opt for the airport Hilton, tired though it is. As already indicated, it is reassuringly and conveniently connected directly to the airport terminals, though a bit of a hike nonetheless. We try to check-in in time to purchase seats on the 2:30 pm hotel shuttle into Rome - 22 euro/person round trip with conveniently located drop off and return pickup by the ‘mouth of truth’. But latest return back to the hotel by this shuttle is 9:00 pm, which can be limiting. The hotel does sell a very decent buffet breakfast starting around 6:30 a.m. (a bit cheaper if you reserve a room with breakfast included). When we don’t want to be confined to a 9 pm curfew or when spending more than one night in Rome, we usually stay at a hopefully more charming place in the centro instead and take a 55euro taxi to our departure terminal (about an hour’s journey) in the morning. Many of our sea food loving friends prefer to hang out in the harbor area of the very nearby town of Fiumicino which has several bnb’s with shuttle service.

Ignore my previous post. Alessio has changed the rental period for his apartment to 3 days minimum, so it's no longer available for just an overnight.

Hi Don,

We do this all the time. We spend the last night before a morning flight at the B&B Hotel Fiumicino. There are actually two of these hotels, right across the tracks from each other, at the first train stop before/ after the airport. They are Fiera 1 & Fiera 2 at the Parco Leonardo stop. It is extremely convenient, and they both have a shuttle that runs from early morning to late at night. The rooms are simple, or sparse, but clean and the beds are comfortable. Much cheaper than the Hilton, and taxis from the airport to the residential areas of Fiumicino are expensive. Min. €35.00.

With the train, you can easily get into Rome and wander about and then get back on at Termini, or Ostiense, or Trastevere to go back to the hotel.

It is popular and busy, so book early.

Here is where their shuttle picks up at FCO.

I would not stay at best western

Dilapidated

They do have a restaurant on site, did not try it, strange hours

About the only other thing nearby, is a McDonald about 1 1/2 mile walk

If I had to do over, depending on your flight time, I would stay near the rail station in Rome

Cannot talk about the hotel connected to the airport, did not have good reviews, plus getting from their to your gate

Quite a few years ago we also had an early AM departure from FCO. We had already spent 3 nights in Rome proper at the start of the trip, so we chose to stay the night before in Lido d'Ostia. It's a beach town, but in late October it wasn't slammed. I won't recommend the B&B (Airbnb? don't remember), but it was pleasant enough to walk around, and we found a nice enoteca with great stuzzichini (snacks) from which you could make a meal. We reserved a taxi to FCO, it arrived on time and cost, I think €25.

Depending on time and energy there are the ruins at Ostia Antica - we had a loooong travel day from Ravenna including a wonderful local train strike, so any sightseeing was not happening.

Don Polo,
I don’t know where/what in Rome you’d like to see, but my elder legs felt it after walking from termini station to Trastevere or Piazza Navona, for example. Surprisingly, taxis can be a bit scarce there too. So, given our preferred walking routes/destinations, this was one of our reasons for preferring the affordable shuttle from the Hilton to the (for us) more conveniently located drop-off/pick-up area of La bocca della Verità.
In any case, I’m sure you’ll enjoy your day in Rome or Fiumicino!

Piazza Navona
Love that area!!!!

There is a taxi stand plenty of taxis, at the west end on

Piazza di Sant'Apollinare 32
00186 Rome
Italy

Plenty at the train stations ,,, just get in the official taxi line,,, do not get one by itself or a group of two or so.
