Ten of us did this yesterday ......Amazingly easy after doing my research but I do want to add a couple of things we discovered that will make it even better.
Buy RT ticket to La Spezia.....we took 759 train with change in Virareggio.....no problem with time transfer
Exit train station in La Spezia...cross the street and go down the stairs....turn left and walk to intersection and CROSS over this street and you will see straight ahead of you a pedestrian boulevard....Via Fiume...there us a tabacco store here we stopped and bought our bus tickets in.
Go straight till the fountain in Piazza Garibaldi.....turn right here onto via Garibaldi. The stall markets also began here.
At the next main intersection....there is a light here....turn left onto Corso Cavour.
You will walk several blocks...stay on left side of the road.....you will see a covered bus stop in front of the Blue Kids stop ...you are where you need to be to take BUS P to Portovenere. It runs about every 20 to 30 minutes

On the return we took the ferry back to La Spezia....buy you ticket right at the dock in Portovenere.....we took the boat that left shortly after 1600.
Exit the boat....turn left....come to where you can cross the street on your right....cross over and continue straight ahead all the way through piazza Garibaldi.....continue straight through to piazza San Bon just below the stazione...cross the street....up up one block to the steps to get to th train stazione. The walk is probably double In time from the ferry than to the bus stop.
Portovenere is a wonderful day trip to make.

Good for you !
Good info for a visit to one of my favorite destinations in Italy.
Thank you Bob......your advice over the years gave Paul and I much inspiration for our yearly trips since his retirement in 2010. We love traveling slowly an basing ourselves in one location and doing day or short journeys from our base. Lucca has become one of our favorites along with Ischia.
