During a previous trip to Italy in 2006, we stayed in the central area of Rome just off the Via del Corso. It was fine and close to many things, but the prices have gone up considerably. We are planning a return in the spring of 2026 and I'm leaning toward Trastevere as the base in Rome for five nights before moving on to Puglia and Sicily for the remainder of the trip.
I'm seeking opinions about Trastevere as a base - I think I've found a quietish guest house in the northeast corner. Has Trastevere become over-crowded? Dumb question since everywhere has become over-crowded! But I'd like to avoid the central areas.
