Venice in winter or late fall

Anyone traveled there recently or relatively recently? I want to avoid the throngs of tourists. I am thinking late November or early December. OR January, but not Carnivale time.

I read a few encouraging posts, but they were from 2015 or so.

I was there last December. Definitely fewer tourists - we entered both the Basilica San Marco and the Campanile without lines. There's more of a chance of aqua alta as well as rain. We've been in December and November several other times and it always seems that the city shuts down much earlier - many restaurants closing way earlier than other times of the year. There are some interesting things to see like the skating rink in Campo San Polo.
