We are a recently-retired couple aiming to resume our travels post-COVID. We've visited many if not most countries in Europe and are now filling in the gaps. Our philosophy is to sleep in the cheapest safe lodging and overspend on dining. We normally self-tour and self-drive outside of cities, and avoid guided tours.

Sounds like the most sensible sort of travel!

Though having just done a short group tour by train to a part of Germany I didn't know and might not have thought of, it was nice to let someone else do the planning, organising and paperwork.

Doing the "planning, organising and paperwork" is half the fun! ;-)

Seriously, we do commercial tours when there is no alternative or they provide access otherwise impossible. And someday we will be unable to manage with carry-on luggage only, elevator-less lodging, etc.
