Itinerary--Fall 2016

Yes. It was 2016.
And it was fabulous!
Hi Jan; Am trying to plan a trip for earlyish April of 2018 and am really struggling with itinerary structure now.... because everywhere looks awesome. For 3 weeks, flying in and out of Rome and driving to the Gargano for 2 nights to start (Peschici? Maybe), then maybe Trani (for 2 or 3 days)?;then trying to decide between polignano, conversano, monopoli or Ostuni for 3 or 4 days (I know they're all likely quite different. )Then after Lecce, likely on to Gallipoli, for 3 or 4 days. Not sure about stopping for an evening in Taranto. On the way back to Rome, we want to stay in Matera for a few days and likely Maratea. The dilemma is that we'd rather not make the same mistake we did in Tuscany back in April. (And I felt like I had researched the heck out of that trip). We stayed at an agriturismo near Montepulciano for a week but were driving driving driving every day. We really loved Cortona and wished we had located there instead. So while I don't want to overthink our base locations, it can make quite a difference even when places are only shortish distances apart. Any advice you can offer would be greatly Appreciated. We enjoy walking, culinary delights, sightseeing; seascapes are lovely but so are rolling hills and mountains.

Here's my advice but I'm not sure you will like it. Keep in mind that this is what I would like and maybe you have different "travel taste" so take it with that in mind.
First, I would skip the Gargano unless you really want to hike and be in Nature. That being said, I've never gone; just my impressions from research.
Maybe begin in Trani for 2 or 3 days to get settled in. We loved walking the marina and the parks there.
Then choose one location (we chose Lecce but it all depends on what appeals to you) and rent an apartment and do a few day trips. You can't possibly get much out of all of those places you listed in the time you have allotted .
Then go on to Matera and Maratea on your way back to Rome.

For me, Matera is a do-not-miss.

Gallipoli seems more of a day trip spot than a week long base. I could see Ostuni being a nice base town.

I am really a hard core slow traveler, perfectly happy wandering the streets of our base city for days, finding new markets, bakeries and bars while hitting the museums, churches, piazzi and parks on foot. We also like to stay "in town" so we don't have to drive most days. After I stay somewhere 2 days, then 3 and then 2 again, I am longing to unpack and cook in "my own" place. Just my style.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Also post again after you've narrowed things down a bit.

One more thing-- I think you should start a separate thread for your trip planning, here in the Italy forum.
Thankyou so much and I will start a separate thread.

I think I definitely put in too much. We also don't like to be rushing around.
