Help Needed Itinerary from Montepulciano to Rome in 9 days, last 4/5 days in Rome

If you get a little tired of reading, Rick Steves has some excellent videos on places to go and things to do. Some of his content is free on Youtube and also available if you have Xfinity and Amazon Prime video.

Yes, I have Rick Steves book "Europe through the Back Door" and a whole box set of his DVDs on Europe. We found out 2 years ago that most of his recommendations were already sold out to those who watch PBS programming.

Agriturismo appeals in many ways, because it gives you a chance to meet and become acquainted with the local people and culture and as long as it isn't too isolated, it's also possible to visit towns/villages so that you can see a whole cross section of society in that area.

You had mentioned earlier that we could consider going over to Le Marche and until anything else is booked, that hasn't been crossed off the list.

This brought to mind this organic farm in Le Marche, very near Urbino - Locanda Valle Nuova. It might be just what you're looking for. My mother and I have booked one of the apartments for the last week of June/first week of July. They also have B&B rooms in the main house. This will be my first time there, but other slow travellers have been before and speak highly of it.

Just at random from the areas that have been mentioned. We enjoyed doing day trips centered around Orvieto (Underground Orvieto was something very different from other archaeological sites). Also enjoyed Val D'Orcia and La Foce (check for days open). For Perugia, we enjoyed the Sangallo Palace hotel -- easy to get to by car; located near public transportation; easy walk to the escalators that take you to the upper town. Of the nearby towns: loved Gubbio and the two-person funicular that goes up to the monastery; found the commercial (ceramics) towns of Deruta and Todi not much to our liking; Spoleto and Spello were interesting. One of the best stops we made was at a paper museum in Fabriano, so obviously a lot depends on what you would find interesting. If you are going to spend multiple days in Florence, take a look at Empoli (a short excursion) and Lucca (worth a leisurely visit).

Hello Anne
Thanks for your response. I have read earlier about Locanda Valle Nuova and have now written to them after your prompt. Initially, it seemed to be a bit out of our way on the way back to Rome, but perhaps not much.
We might also try to get to somewhere in Abruzzo, but time is getting short at the back end of the trip.

Thanks. Some good suggestions there and we should be able to see some of them when we stay in Montepulciano. We have 3 days in Florence, but thought that we might stay put and immerse ourselves in the city rather than travel to nearby towns.

There's really so much to see and it's just not possible to see and do it all.
