Roz,
I used a Canon 50D on tripod with a 300 mm lens. I made a homemade filter using Baader Solar Film 5.0.
To make the filter, I used two pieces of black matting and cut a circle that was slightly larger than the lens in the center of the two pieces of matting. Then I placed a piece of the solar film over the hole of one and carefully placed the other piece of matting on top and taped them together. Then off to Walmart to the craft section for a piece of Styrofoam. I cut a hole so it would slide over the lens and taped the filter on the other side. Covered the Styrofoam in painters tape to make sure no white pieces get on lens and voilà I had a filter. I will try to post picture of filter tomorrow.
The Baader Solar Film allows for true color of white to be viewed and allows for a sharp photo. I shot in Raw and JPEG. The shot I posted was a JPEG no editing. (I did crop). I have not viewed the photos on my big computer with a UHD monitor yet, but tomorrow I will. Curious to see what they do look like.
Sorry - a long answer to a short question.
