September 2023 in Venice

My husband and I will be in Venice for the month of September. We’re really looking forward to it as we’ve only been there once before, in 2007 for 2 days. Any favorite day trips (via train as we don’t want to rent a car) or things in Venice or surrounding area I might not know about we should see?

Bassano del Grappa might interest you. We spent a few hours there while staying in the Verona area, it's accessible by train from Venice. A grappa museum, a ceramics and typography museum, some good restaurants and small shops, a scenic old bridge and a very lovely town to just wander around in.

Verona and Vicenza are also easily accessible by train and have a lot to see. The web site RossiWrites has a lot of good articles about visiting cities in the area (like Vicenza). The author lived in Vicenza for years.

In Venice there are a lot of atypical options. For example, we've done 2 tours with Terra e Acqua to see the lagoon and islands that are not easily reachable with public transportation. We've rented bicycles to ride across the Lido and Pellestrina. We've taken rowing lessons. Any descriptions of what you might be interested in would help.

Hi Cindy!! Another cool place to visit is Cittadella. I wrote a blog post about my visit (with lots of photos). I was staying in Trieste Treviso when I took the train to Cittadella so the train info will be different. I took a quick look at the train schedule from Venice and it looks like it's about an hour and 15 mins with 1 train change.

I only had one day to do a day trip while in Trieste Treviso, so I spent my time in Cittadella walking the wall and then continued on to Bassano del Grappa, another great town to visit (as Joe recommended). It was not a very slow travel thing for me to do to spend time in 2 places in one day! If I had it to do over, I definitely would have spent a full day in each place.

Here's my Cittadella blog post and here's Bassano del Grappa blog post.

Lots of great recommendations in this thread.

Have fun in Venice!

**Whoops! I realized I wrote Trieste when I meant Treviso! Just edited to make the changes.

We've only done it by car so I don't know what train service there is, but there are several lovely towns down the coast, Ravenna, Cesenatico and Rimini. Then once in Rimini it's a short distance to San Marino. That would be too much for a day trip, but plan a 2-3 day trip. One month is a long time to spend in Venice.

Fully agree on a month duration being a long time in Venice. Would also look to Croatia and Slovenia for other short trips and a few days' break from the tourism and commercialism of Venice. There are ferry connections to Croatia. Ljubljana has a small, but beautiful old town with Lake Bled being a nearby opportunity.

The Veneto has so much to offer with many small towns including the delightful Asolo, one of my late husband‘s favourite places in Italy.
Realistically though for train travel I agree with others Vicenza, and Padua are very rewarding places to visit.
The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza is one of Palladio‘s marvels in my opinion and of course, La Rotonda a World Heritage site. You’d probably need a taxi from Vicenza however. Padua is a fabulous place for a day or longer visit but make sure you take refreshments at Gran Cafe Pedrocchi probably included in Rossi writes as above.
We visited many of the villas in the Veneto and were not disappointed.
One of our favourites;

I‘m not sure if you can still sail up the Brenta to view some as you glide by, alternatively you could get to Padua that way from Venice or take a whole day visiting villas by boat.
Agree with others, Treviso, Bassano, great places to visit.
A month in Venice/ the Veneto sounds utterly blissful to me. Getting away from the hoards in Venice to places fairly close by on day trips makes for a great contrast. Perfect Slow Travel !
Lucky you !

We took a daytrip tour on a boat up the Brenta Canal from Venice to Padua, stopping at all the villas along the way.
I believe we booked it with Viator, and it was really enjoyable.
When we got to Padua, we found our own way back to Venice by train.
I would also highly recommend Ravenna.
There is also Chioggia, a day trip involving vaporetti, buses and ferries to get there, but very few tourists out that way,

Hi,
Sounds like a really good trip.
I’m calculating that we spent several weeks over the same amount of holidays just exploring the Veneto particularly the wonderful villas, gardens & on the Palladio trail.
We must have spent 6 weeks in Venice too but not all in one go as we were working.
I don’t think even then we did it justice but it depends upon your tastes of course. So much art, architecture & hidden gardens to explore.
I have very many happy memories of that part of Italy much enhanced by Ruskin & “Stones of Venice “.
If you like opera then you might be interested in an evening here ;
We really enjoyed it.

Interesting that you mention Musica Palazzo @Wendy Ashworth. I'll be back in Venice for a week in September and was considering seeing The Barber of Seville there. You recommend it?

One other thing that can help if you plan on taking the vaporetto is the Che Bateo app. It gives you schedules of the vaporetti and helps you determine what boat to take between destinations.

Hi, We really enjoyed it. It’s a very intimate performance with the performers moving from room to room for each act. It’s very different from visiting La Fenice of course but we arrived by vaporetto on a stormy night which gave Palazzo
Barbarigo Minotto the most wonderful atmosphere, for a performance of La Traviata. It was a great way to see inside a fabulous building too with further atmosphere being provided when a window flew open and the Grand Canal was lit with flashes of lightning !

While in Venice a few years ago, we took a tour called Row Venice where a venetian woman taught us how to row a boat (like a gondola but not). Very fun and educational. Enjoy!

For me you have to experience Venice from the water. We've taken rowing lessons from rowvenice.org and it was a very special way to see and enjoy and understand Venice.

Where were you able to purchase tickets? We are arriving September 11 but only for 3 nights. We were researching for an event like this in Venice.
