Travel 2021 Southern Italy

Haven't been recently (2014), but strongly suggest making a base out of Lecce (and, depending on length of stay, another town further to the west to expand your circuit and reduce driving time). We did a loop of Lecce, Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, Taranto, Metaponto, Matera, , Locorotondo, the Trulli towns (Alberobello, and Cisternino), and Ostuni during an extended stay and loved the geography, people, and food. Matera stands out, of course, but each town had character and scenery. The drive down the coast to Santa Maria (with a stop for a picnic on a windswept beach and a visit to Grotta Zinzulusa) was a great day.

Stayed at the Risorgimento Resort Hotel in the heart of Lecce -- easy access in and out of town for our day trips and great service in the hotel. Spent a day at the beach near San Cataldo while there that was less than ideal (not the greatest beach or facilities, but still a beach).

I can vouch for this book, that's me in post #10.
