United Kingdom - TV SHOWS & MOVIES

There's a nice interview with Nicola Walker in today's Guardian, with a link back to an amusing 'Who’s the best new TV cop: River’s Nicola Walker or Unforgotten’s Nicola Walker?' feature earlier this year. We missed both when they were on TV, but have just got River on DVD.

Yes, we watched Doctor Foster: great acting from Suranne Jones, but rather a lot of irritatingly implausible plotlines.

Absolutely loving Season 3 of The Bridge! We caught up with episodes 7 & 8 a couple of nights ago, and will be left in suspense for a bit: we're working on the night the final 2 episodes are broadcast, and then off to California for a couple of weeks... No spoilers please!

Luther is backing up on the HDD, ready for our return: ditto the final episode of Capital - yes, not as rich as the (superrb) novel, but some lovely performances, especially from the always-wonderful Toby Jones.

Unforgotten is excellent...an old-fashioned police procedural with a fantastic cast. Gemma Jones (again) and Tom Courtenay are wonderful as two of the suspects as is Ruth Sheen.

Gemma Jones is also great in Capital.....

... we started watching Season 1 of Upstairs Downstairs. Many of the episodes of the first season were not shown in the US until years later. (There was a labor dispute and most of the programs were in black and white which PBS chose not to broadcast until 1989.)

Anyway, it is a hoot to watch them...some of them for the first time. Production values are a bit creaky but the characters and scripts are great. It remains to be seen if we are hooked into binging through all five seasons.

I remember watching all of Upstairs Downstairs shows years ago. We must have bought the series on DVD. It was a great show.

We gave up on London Spy too. Good acting but the plot seemed implausible.

We are enjoying The Bridge. We are getting two shows each Saturday. I think it ends this weekend.

We missed the first episode of Doctor Foster and I couldn't find it on iPlayer. I will look for it again.

I have The Capital recorded to watch soon.

For American TV, which we watch on Sky Atlantic, we are watching The Affair season 2 and Homeland. We gave up on season two of The Leftovers (well, I would have kept watching but Steve said it was turning into Lost - too weird). I really liked the first season and also read the book.

We have started Season 2 of Upstairs, Downstairs....the first season was a bit uneven but with Season 2, it has hit its stride. Production values are improving and the characters have become fully formed....especially the character of Sarah played by the incomparable Pauline Collins.

On a lark, I got a free month of Acorn TV and we started watching Season 1 of Upstairs Downstairs. Many of the episodes of the first season were not shown in the US until years later. (There was a labor dispute and most of the programs were in black and white which PBS chose not to broadcast until 1989.)

A couple of years ago, we binged through all of Upstairs Downstairs on DVD from Netflix. We were watching Downton Abbey at the same time and getting characters confused.

Finished the five seasons of Upstairs, Downstairs......pretty strong overall with a very satisfying string of final episodes. Will start watching final season of Downton Abbey now but I think it doesn't hold a candle to Upstairs Downstairs.

I have them highlighted on the BBC web site.....

Did you see the 1972 BBC War and Peace with a young Anthony Hopkins? Still memorable.....

Did you watch the new episodes of Luther?

We watched And Then There Were None....thought the first episode strong, the other two--not so much.

First episode of War and Peace seemed a bit clunky to us.....

I like War and Peace - but I love costume dramas. The last episode is this weekend.

I agree about And Then There Were None, but I still liked it. It was filmed in Cornwall and at Harefield House in Hillingdon, just outside London. I googled to see where in Cornwall and people think they used an island off Cornwall but added in the graphic of the big house.

Second episode of War and Peace didn't change our opinion....seemed very flat though sumptuous.

Luther has to be the darkest show on television.....but Idris Elba is great. Loved the gangster character played by Patrick Malahide....

Pauline, I think you have four more episodes of "War and Peace" yet to come....it is a very long book. :)

It begins showing on US television this weekend.....

I think however that we are going to give the rest of the series a pass......

@Jim Zurer you know more about what is going with British TV than I do, and I live there (here?)! I was just going to post about Happy Valley. We loved season 1.

There is also a new season of Shetland and so far it is very good.

We have been enjoying the The Real Marigold Hotel on BBC2.....a travelogue about India (Jaipur) with the premise that eight British "celebrities" are going there to check out whether retirement there is a possibility. (The program is inspired by the film The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel.) Once that premise is knocked away, the first episode was rather charming.

Second episode of Real Marigold Hotel not as good as the first.....

Just finished watching Spin (French political mini-series) on the remarkable Channel 4 streaming site--All 4. I was pleasaantly surprised. Any one else watch it?

Seems to be an awful lot available on the All 4 web site.

We have been talking about Spin on the France forum, since it is French TV. We liked it. Season 1 finished, but season 2 starts on Friday. One of the PR guys (Ludo) was the lawyer on Spiral.
