The water level was still rising. The calle had at least 4-5 inches of water before it started receding.
I cannot believe that young man is barefoot! yuck.

Thanks for doing your trip report.
It helps keep my memories of our month there in October alive.
Have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy 2019.

Christmas day -

We got up and had a leisurely healthy breakfast of yogurt, fruit and granola plus a slice of fugassa from Dal Nono Colussi. Since our regular caffè is always closed on Christmas day, we walked to Pasticceria Tonolo for due cappuccini. Tonolo's was crowded but we got our coffee with very little wait.

Our walk took us through Campo Santa Margherita to the Accademia bridge to San Marco, Rialto bridge, to the empty fish market and then home. Campo Santa Margherita was fairly quiet but as we approached the Academia bridge we started seeing more tourists (around mid-day). Piazza San Marco to Rialto bridge was buzzing with people, much more tourists/tour groups than years past.

Back in apartment for lunch and some Christmas movies.

San Stefano day, again foggy

We stopped in at the Frari church to check out the presepe and were surprised that it was a free day to visit

Buon anno a tutti!!!

After brealfast and coffee, we took a wallk from the Rialto to Sant'Elena. We have done this walk on new year's day in the last few years.

Venice has a lot of tourists and tour groups today, a lot more than usual for this time of year, I think. There were long lines to enter both the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale.

We walked by the children's rides just past Via Garibaldi. This ride only had two passengers - a young child with the grandfather

And finally, Sant'Elena

At the end of October, acqua alta/high tide was unusually high (@156cm). People were talking of canceling their Venice trip due to the floods. Today, the reverse is true (low tide today was -45cm). That is about a two-meter difference.

The water level is so low now during low tide that some of the canals smell like sewers. One also sees (if one is looking) parts of Venice that is normally not shown on travel brochures.

Interesting photos of the acqua bassa! I'm reminded of the only time we've ever spent New Year in Venice, 1999: great fun going to the ATM in the morning and getting out the brand new Euro notes.

Acqua bassa or very low tides

Yesterday infront of the Hard Rock Cafe. Some tourists were still taking their gondola rides although the smell and the views were not so pretty. This was at about -30 cm and was forcasted to go as low as -45 cm.

Compared to this one from October 29th when the tide was 120 cm (peaked at 156 cm about three hours later). No gondola rides.
